Basic Recipe
Oil - 1/2 cup (Like sweet almond oil,
castor oil,
coconut oil, olive oil or combination of them)
Beeswax - 1/4 cup (or soy wax if you making vegan lip balm. but this tends to be a little lighter than beeswax. In that case you nee to add a little more to get the consistency you like.)

Adding Butter
There are various Commonly used natural cosmetic butters you can add to your natural lip balm. Adding butter to lip balm make the lip balm more silky on the lip and moisturizing which make the lip feel tender and soft. The butters include and not limited to :
Shea butter - you can use refined or unrefined ( i use unrefined)
Cocoa butter- i like the natural scent of the unrefined cocoa butter in lip balm especially when making my "chocomint" lip balm
Mango butter- This butter is more silkier and lighter that the above mentioned butter. More common in refined.
When you add butter to your oil, you might not need to as as much beeswax as you do when there is no butter. This is because these butters are harder than just oil.
Other Optional Ingredients
Coloring- can be oily or powder form like Mica mineral pigment
Flavors- Usually in oily form. there are also some in powder form. oil is easier to use.
Vitamin E - capsule or the beauty vitamin e oil.
Lanolin - Absolutely optional. this oils is very stretch and thick Best used in lip gloss making
Tools You Need
-Bow- to melt your ingredients in
-Measuring Cups or kitchen scale if you are going by ounces, grams etc
-Cloves- To keep your process very sanitary especially if you intend to give them out as gifts or sell them
-Containers - This could be lip balm plastic tubes, lip balm tins or little lip balm jars
Tip
How hard or soft it is depends on your recipe measurement. The texture of the lip balm depends on your oil choice. I personally like to use castor oil as my major oil. I like to add a little coconut oil for more shine too.
It's best to allow the oil to cool off a little before pouring into container especially if pouring into plastic tubes as this will prevent leakage, also limit the depth of the hole you get on top when it hardens.
this will also limit the plastic particles that may melt into your lip balm.
